ASSESSMENT COURT

A sitting of the Assessment Court wa held yesterday to hear objections to thi valuations of the Borough Valuer (Mr B D. B. Itobinson), Mr W. A. Barton, S.M presiding. ! Mr A. F. Matthews objected to the valuation of sections 7 and BE, Sbeehan-street, Wbataupoko, 5 acres and house rated at £9O, and ashed that it be reduced to r £BO per annum. The capital value he estimated at £I7OO, and he had offered 2£ acres of the property for £6OO without success. A property opposite, containing 2£ acres and a house was only rated at £55.” Captain Chrisp stated that three months ago, togethor with Mr Coleman, he had valued the properties for the objectors to the last borough assessment, and placed Mr Matthews’ property down ut £I4OO. Jane Gregson applied for a reduction on sectionc 303-4, Gladstone road, and 35 and 36, Itoofc aud Williams stroots. The Gladstone road proportiuß had been empty for tlireo years, but sbo would lei 303, shop and dwelling, valued at 4130 per annum, for 12s, and 304, dwelling, valued at 4120 per annum, toe 11s. The sections in Hoot and William streets, containing two dwell, ings, were valued at 4130. Shu had been offered 41600 for the Gladstone road property.—Value sustained in absence of evidence.

Cbaa. Gray (Mr Stock) objected to the “luatioue of sections 101 to 106 A, Clifford street, and 107 to 110, Stafford street, two aeros, rated at £6O ; also seotions 16 to 18, Whittaker street, seven acres, rated at £7O. Mr Gray, attorney for the absentee, stated that the ten Stafford and Clifford streets sections wore let for £lO a year. He put a capital value of £BOO upon them. The Whittaker street property brought in £l2 a year rent, and be valued it at £SO per acre. Evidence was given by Mr Robinson, who put a capital value of £I2OO upon the Stafford and Clifford streets property. Two hundred pounds had beeu offered for corner section 107, which he valued at only £l2O. An acre near by had sold for £BSO, and half an acre nearer siill for £215. Ho was aware the land would not bring in that rental as at present unimproved and let for grazing.—Valuation sustained. Hia Worship pointed out no evidence had been brought against the expert valuation of the valuer, Cecil M. Maunsoll (Mr Stock) objected to the valuation of sections 98, 99, 81 to S 5 and 143, Stout street.—Captain Chrisp stated that he valued 98-09 (river bank) at capital value of £470, rental £33. It was assessed at £SOO and £23. The rest of the property, which included the dwelling, he valued at £9OO and £45 rental.—Mr Robertson gave evidence that the 3 acres 34 perches contained in the latter sections wero worth £1250, having 14 chains of frontage. Ho valued tho house, orchard and fencing at £3so.—Sections 81 to 85 and 143 reduced by £lO. Soveral other objections were struck | out owing to the non-appearance of ob- I f jectors. I l

His Worship remarked that the small number of objections showed the Borough Valuer hod given general satisfaction. H 9 had performed his duty in a manner which was highly complimentary to himHelf. -
