VISITING ATHLETES
THEIR GRIEVANCES
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, Inst night. Interviewed, Duffy said the best Now Zealand sprinters he had yet met wore Hnrtland, of Christchurch, and Goodbohere and Seddon. of Wollington, but the athletos in the colony know little of the art of starting as practised in America. In Wellington tho starter made the “ Sit ” too long. Shrubb complained that tho handicappers were too generous in their starts. It was impossible for him to give such long starts, and it was not to bo expected he was going to kill himself ohasing men a long way in front, although at all times ho went out to win. In fulute he thought he might have to ask for a limit to tho handicaps. In Auckland if tho limit in a mile wa3 60 or 70 yards, rend 300 yards in the throe milt s, it would give him more hoarh Tho visitors left for Auckland this moruiog.
Watson, starter of the athletic, sporls on Saturday, expiainod that he considered that if ho met men like Duffoy and Wid« nrer boat the pi.-tpl it would bo unfair to tho other competitors not so expert, and they would have no chance. Ho had never li t any mm beat him, and did not intend to do so. Hu was proceeding to say he had ordered them off, whon Dnffey iutorposod, and said this was not so. After being penalised twice ho withdrew of bis own accord. Watson accepted this, and said that,after penalising them ho'warned them that next timo he would order them off the ground. On Saturday it was given out thot the starter had actually ordered the men off.
GOLF.
Tito annual general meeting of the P.B. Golf Olub was held on Saturday last, when a largo number of members were present. Mr A. Komvay was elected to the chair.
The report and balance-sheet for the past year were read and adopted, and the Club is to bo congratulated upon the excellent stale of it' finances audits suooessful year. It had been feared that it might bo ncoassury to consider tho question of moving farther out of town, but owing to the kindness of the owners of properties on Which the links are situated the Club is b-ill fortunate in having links within such ensy reach, and a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the owners of tho properties for their kindness in permitting play to continue thereon.
The following officers were elected for tha ensuing year President, Mr R. J. Reynolds ; vice-president, Mr Goo. Grant, captain, Mr W. B. Willoek ; secretary and treasurer, Dr Buckeridge ; auditor, Mr Butler ; committee, Messrs Bull, Burke, Cuthbert, Partridge, and Balneavis ; green committee, Messrs Keiha, Darton, and Barlow.
A recommendation to the incoming committee was made that a competition bo hold for first and second year playors. A motion was carried permitting secretary and treasurer to accept a reduction of subscription from past members of the Club who wished to remain with the Club as hon, mombers but wore no longer dosirous or able to play. Tho following gentlemen were elected members : Messrs Barron, Todd, Barlow, Omorod, Tuahae, Koiha, and W. Itangi. Voibs of thanks were passed to the owners of properties, donors of prizes, outgoing officers, and to the ladies’ club for providing afternoon ton.
