HAWKE’S BAY v. POVERTY BAY.
The representative erioket match be tween/’Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay eventuates on Taruheru on Monday and Tuesday next. A really good wicket has been prepared, but there is a fear that it may wear in a two days’ match. The weekly half-holiday has been changed to Tuesday, which will enable townpeople to witness the finish of the match. At a meeting of the Association last evening the .final arrangements for the reception and entertainment of the visitors were com Pi The’ will represent Poverty Bay Sh “ rp '. W ‘ Gibson, Sheridan (Uniteci y ,' Easker, Torkington, Charles (Taruheru; MCroe • son, J. Gibson (Gisborne), RaymiT. (Waerenga-a hika); emergencies: Hodg kinson (Gisborne), and Sedon (Taruheru). The following criticism on the merits of the local players should interest cricketers :
R. G. Hallamoro, the wicketkeeper of the team. He will represent Hawke’s Bay against Auckland this. week in that position. A good forcing bat on a good wicket. Has not struck form with the bat this year, but is worth bis plpoe in the team for his wicket-keeping alone. J. Charles : Holds the bowling average for the Taruheru Club, which won the championship. Has shown splendid form with the ball in the trials. Keepß a fine length, and ,doea not send down many loose ones. A. H. Hodge : A good, steady bat with strong defenoe. Soores well all round the wicket, but is particularly strong on the off. Smart field at point. W. Gibson : The soundest batsman in the team, and a very hard man to shift afser the first few overs. Has scored well throughout the trials. Good long-field. Slow lob bowler, gets punished. H. H. Sharp : A fine wristy batsman with good off strokes. Goes right at the i bowling from the jump, and characterises each stroke with pluok. Represents Hawko’s Bay against Auokland this week. Bowls a slow off : break with an erratic length. Indifferent field. O. Lasker : The Bonner of the team. A I rapid scorer when set. The best field in
the team. C. McPherson: A bowler who Bwings across from leg, with a fine length. Plays a nice bat, and is particularly aggressive on the leg. A good field, and would make a good captain. j J. Gibson: Good field and serviceable bat. , Strong on the leg side, but inclined to get too much in front of his wioket. Torkington: Good defensive batsman, should attack more. Meets the ball with the full face of his bat, and makes all bis strokes along the carpet. Good change bowler, with leg work and easy delivery, i Good field. Picked to represent Hawke’s | Boy against Auckland this week. Raymond: A nico free batsman, cuts and drives well. Scores freely when set. I Slightly off form'with the bat at present, but should be all right with a week at the nets. A safe field and a good change bowler who mixes them up well. Will strengthen the bowling if his leg'will stand
the strain. . M. Sheridan : The colt of the team. A patient batsman, scoring freely,on the leg. Good fast bowler, and good field, with a safe pair of bands. . ' H Hodgkinson, Ist emergency:. A scoring batsman, cuts and drives well. Buns well between the wickets. A splendid field and safe catch. ... " - , , • F Sedoa : A steady bat, with sound de. fence. Good field afid bowls a serviceable alow, good length ball.
