NUHAKA NORTH.
[From Our Own Correspondent
A meeting of the Nubaka Branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held at Morore on Saturday, March 11, and the attendance of members was very good. Mr Proudlook presided. The minutes of previous meeting were road and confirmed, then recent correspondence was read and j considerable discussion ensued on various I local matters. Finally a resolution was proposed by Mr Show, seconded by Mr G. Coop and carried, to the effect that Messrs G. Walker, A Piioudlock and M. J. Joblin be appointed a committee to wait upon the Waikokopu Harbour Board in relation to the building of the proposed shed at Waikokopu, and to report the result of their proceeding at the meeting to bo held n the Ist April. The apathy of the Harbour Board is the one subject that excites general condemnation throughout the district. In ordinary matters progress has been satisfactory. The intermittent visitations of sunshine and showers since the bush burnings have ensured- success for the gruss and turnip aowiDgs, although the latter have Buffered from the ravages of grasshoppers on some holdings. Seeing that fierce fires have
recently passed over the seed beds it becomes a mystery from whence the pest proceeds, as no sufficient authority exists for ascribing their desoeDt to the showers. The settlers in the district have suceess-
:ully established telephonic communicator!, covering about 40 miles, and
junctioDed with the Wharera’e-Gisborna line, and communication will soon be established southwards via Morere and Nuhaka.
On the 11th a general picnic took place si Morere, the Hot Springs there con*
stituting the chief attraction. The weather was charming in every rospro', and as the roads were fairly satisfactory most of the
settlers, with their families and friends, were present. Provision,, excellent and
abundant, accumulated, and during the ' afternoon tennis and other games were played, all present appearing to thoroughly enjoy the day’s outing. A herd of cows of about 400 head, from Taranaki, passed through the district on Wednesday morning, en route for Gis. borne. They were in charge of Mr Faulk* j ner. I
