DEATH OF MR G. FISHER.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A well-known figure passed from the public life of Wellington by the death of Mr Geo. Fisher, M.H.R., who died at the District Hospital to-night from dropsy. Mr Fisher took a, very prominent part in the affairs of this city. He was twice its Mayor, and one of its representatives in Parliament ainee.lßß4, except for -the period from 1893.t0 J. 899. ■ Starting life in humble circumstances he learned the trade of a compositor in Melbourne, and worked as a journeyman in several parts of the South Island. Subsequently he became Parliamentary reporter. He was Minister of Education and Commissioner of Trade and Customs in the Atkinson Government from 1887 to 1889. He was a man of great natural talent, whose strong will in the bright days of his career was aided by a remarkably strong physique. Mr Fisher,, who waß 62 years of age, leaves a widow and grown-up family.
