(Per Press 'Association.) Auckland, last night. I Surveyors have been engaged by the Railway Department to survey the routes of the proposed duplication of railways from Auckland to Penrose, and the work was commenced on Wednesday. ' A large amount of data in connection with the matter will have to be collected before a decision can be come to as to whether tbe
existing railway will be straightened and duplicated aud the tunnel in the Domain enlarged to carry two sets of rails, or whether an alternate route would be better. The survey is expected to last several months.
The claims ,of the Auckland Ironmoulders’ Industrial Union wore investigated yesterday before Mr Justice Chapman aud Messrs Slater and Brown. Two new disputes for the Conciliation Board wore filed with tho Clerk of Awards, the grocers’ assistants’ aud the fish-curers’.
At a meeting of fruiterers regarding the Bhops Aot, it was resolved „tbat it was desirable that the draft Bill as it left the Lower House be reinstated as regards the exemption of fruiterers. At a meeting of hairdressers and tobacconists regarding the Shops Act, it was decided that a deputation wait on the Premier and inform him that they desired that' clause 3 should be struck out, and ! people in the trade Bhould fix their own hours by a majority. Mr Goiter, solicitor, is a passenger by the Manapouri for the Islands. He goes to personally advise the King of Tonga in connection with the deportation of the Primo Minister, Satoke.
