I Surveyors have been engaged by the Railway Department to survey the routes of the proposed duplication of railways from Auckland to Penrose, and the work was commenced on Wednesday. ' A large amount of data in connection with the matter will have to be collected before a decision can be come to as to whether tbe

existing railway will be straightened and duplicated aud the tunnel in the Domain enlarged to carry two sets of rails, or whether an alternate route would be better. The survey is expected to last several months.
