TOKOMARU. BAY. February, 6. Good weather has prevailed this
last week or two ; feed, is plentiful everywhere, and all stock are doing well, Grass seed sowing is about over, and all the wool is in—it has nearly all been shipped away. Several parties have started o.ut on bush falling contracts in the far back country. -
Fruit is plentiful where there are orchards, the season all through haying been favorable. Great interest was taken in the cricket matches on Friday antf Saturday last, Tolago Bay proving themselves real Britons on both days at an uphill gaipe. Had. the conditions of Mr Loisel’s cup competition been kept, one of them being that matches should start not later than ten o’clock, the result might have been different on both days with an kpur or more time to play. Another year it will be well for all l (the clubs to attend to this condition.
Polo has “ cajught on” in Tokomaru. Several young natives, as well as .Europeans, may, be seen practising on the beach now. Sevoral horses are in work forour annual races on the 21st, inst. The Herald was here last Saturday and Sunday, week. After, landing a large Auckland cargo she shipped, over 300 bales of wool.
Captain ’ Skinner, with' hils new boat, arrived here yesterday, and nearly the whole, of the residents availed themselves of the genial Captain’s kindness) and hospitality to visit the Kaeo. It was a beautiful day, and the sea fairly, calm. Nevertheless, ' there were several victims to sea-sickness. The hoat is roomy, and will be -quiet a boon to the Coast. She .will be able to carry qpite a number of passengers, and it is the intention of the captain to run a regular time-table. Captain SikShmer deserves the support of the whole Coast for his enterprise, hi ! s unfailing courtesy,, and attention to his customers. May every, success attend -the K aeo and her. CRICKET. TOKOMARU V. TOLAGO BAY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday last Tokomaru and Tolago Bay met on the former’s ground to play their return match. The wicket 'was in good condition considering the amount of rain that fell the two preceding nights. Tokomaru went to the wickets first and put together 97 before they' were dismissed. G. Cotterill 18, L. E. Cotterill and Kelley 21 each. Sigloy 12 and Johnstone 11 (not out) were the double figure, contributors. Tolago Bay made 61 in their first Innings, Morris 29 and W. Reeves 14, batted beßt for them. Tokomaru’s second innings realised 79, G. Cotterill 26, and J. oate3 15, beingfjsbe principal contributors. Tolago requiring 115 to avert a defeat, and with a little over an hour to got them .in.very nearly, succeeded in getting them
This match was played on the' Tokomaru ground on Saturday, tho 6th inst The day was all that could bo deßired for cricket. Quito a number of spectators, including many ladies, witnessed tho match, W. Beeves (capt.) won the toss for Tolago and elected to bat, ho and J. B. Morris opening, tho former making 23. Halo 20 and Boynoids 15, being the batsmen to make double figures. The innings closed Eor 64 runs. Beale and Ludbrook bowled unchanged throughout the innings, the former keeping up his bowling reputation with an averogo of six wickots for 32 run Che Waipiro captain, Beale, sentLudbroo and K. S. Williams to the wickets to ope for Waipiro. Tho former put up a recor inniDgs for a Coast match, 71 not out, an only marred by one chance in the slip earl.vjin the inDings. C. E. Nurse 35 am T. Beatham 19 were the other double figure contributors. The innings olosei for 137. W. Beeves had the bowlirn honors with six wickets for 33 runs, all the wickets being clean bowled. Tolago’f second innings was deo larod closed wth eight wickets down for 114, knocked up in a little over an hour. With the task set them of getting Waipiro out for Jess than 61 runs, Tolago took the field at 5 p.m. At 5.46 time was palled, two wickets being down with 40 up, Waipiro thus winning the match and Mr Loisel’s cup.
