- There being seven 410’s, they will have to shoot off for last placa in the 50. Before the shooting commenced this morning Captain Collins announced to the assembled competitors that the executive had decided to increase the prize money in the Otago mateh (with which to-day’s proceedings were to start) from £62 to £IOO, by giving 38 additional prizes of £l, eight of which would be additional to the tyro prize list. The Otago match 600 aod 700 yds, 10 shots, the -final matoh in the scries before tho Championship, began shortly before eight this morning, under satisfactory shooting conditions, a clear atmosphere and no wind, —but these conditions did not last long, and the shooting loon became very difficult. A wind sprang ip shortly after the 600yds was started.
and was just sufficient to disturb the oourse I of the bullets, and later on the wind cams up in heavy puffs, which upset the calculations of tbe very best marksmen, and I some of tho most experienced went down I for bad scores. At the 700 yd range the wind doveloped into a fitful gale, aud the I oonsequenco was that man who oama on with fair scores broke up utterly. At tho 600 yd range Melroy, of Nelson, who was head of tho aggregate for the day by 4 I points, made 600, and increased bis lead his aggregate being then 409. Martin, of Timaru, who was 8 points behind Melroy ! at the last, ran up Into 2nd place with an aggregate of 409. His score was 49, top I score for the range. Shaw, of Ohinomuri, cracked up and registered only 38, which sent him down several points. W. Loveday, of Mauriceville, retained third position with an aggregate of 403, having made 44 Wilkie, Upper Hull, got 44, which brought J
up his aggregate to 400. Drummond, oi I Dannevirke, with a soore of 45, was 397 a tie with Shaw. At the 600yds Smaili I was among those who cracked up, having I only registered 29, while J. Wilson, Christchurch, got only 22,and B. Marshall 28. The highest range score was made by McI Almont, a tyro (43), who also won the match with a score of 87. Tbe positions in the aggregates wore again shifted somewhat duriDg the last range, as may be best gathered from the list of highest aggregate of those who arc to take part in the Championship Matoh to-morrow.
