AGENT GENERAL’S REPORT. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. ’ The Industries and Commerce Department- has received the following cable from the Agent General for New Zealand, dated London, 4th inst: — has been a better tone in tbe mutton market since last week’s report, tbe average price for Canterbury mutton beiDg 4id per lb (light weight); for Dunedin, Southland and W.M.E. Coy.’s brand, 4 1 8d per lb : for other North Island inntton, 3 7-8 d per lb. The lamb market ia steady and there is fair business doing. The average price today for prime Canterbury is 6 l-8d per lb, and for other New Zealand brands 5 7-8 d per lb. There has bson no alteration in the beef market since last week’s report. The average price to-day for hindquarterß of New Zealand is 3 1 8d per lb;.forequarters 23-8 d per lb. Quotations are normal. The butter market is very firm. Buyers, fearing an advance, are buying freely, and market prospects are favorable. The average price of choicest N.Z butter to-day is 104 s per cwt, Danish 1093 and Argentine 102 s. The cheese market is steady, but there is only n small demand. The average prioe of finest N.Z. cheese is 50s per cwt. The market is more likely to advance than decline. Deliveries are now diminishing. The hemp market is dull in spot deliveries. There is no more demand in distant deliveries. The price of NZ. hemp, good fair Wellington grade, on spot to-day per ton is £3O 10s. The present stock is 974 tons, as against 1022 tons at this date last year. The price for Manila hemp, fair current grade, on spot to-day. is T 39 lCs per ton. There is a better demand for cocksfoot seed, bnt the supply meets the demand. The average price todav for bright, clear N.Z. cocksfoot seed, weighing 171b3 per bushel, on spot is 50s per cwt. Tho prospects of the hop market is improving and prices are firm at £7 per owt. Importations of River Plate mutton, lamb and butter into the United Kingdom during the months of February last totalled respectively 294,685 carcases,■ 36,282 earcases„and 8,830 cwts, distributed as follows: London, 89,431 carcases of mutton ; Liverpool, 175,249 ; Hull, 16,314; South Hampden, 1000; Newcastle, 5062; Plymouth, 1241; Glasgow, 6388. London, 15,088 carcases of lamb ; Liverp001,20,734; Plymouth, 100; Glasgow, 300. Ol butter 8830 cwt went to Liverpool, Hull and Southampton.
