NOTES FROM WAIROA.
A hairdresser and a bootmaker intend <o start business at Nuhaka.
Mr A. Worsnop, of Tiniroto, has bought out Mr Si Gibson’s carrying business and lease of 'Springhill, Frasertown. Mr Pat. terson, of Napier, resumes the property at Tiniroto lately occupied by Mr Worsnop, the lease having expired. Mr Hoefcor McGregor, late manager of the Kia Ora factory, Poverty Bay, has taken over the management of the Wairoa Dairy Faotory, in place of Mr W. Clark, resigned. Mr Gaddum has some enormous sunflowers nine or ten feet high, and one in particular has a flower, the circumference being five feet three inches 1 The County Council will meet on Friday, 10th March. At this meeting the question of adjusting the representation of the various ridings of the county will be considered. It is probable the Waikaremoana riding will be divided, and a Nuhaka riding oreated.
Mr Gaddum, has so far been very successful in trying sevoral experiments to eradicate blackberries.
The pigeongram service from Wairoa to Waikoremoana is very highly spoken of. It enables visitors to beep in touch daily with the.rest of the oolony, and dispels the anxious barrier of isolation which formerly existed.
As matters stand at present, private wires are being connected with Gisborne ; consequently Gisborne will be the centre instead of Wairoa. The fee charged appears to bo the obstaole. Settlers look at the £5, which, it must not bo forgotten, includes instruments: they look on this sum as an outlay only, and forget the benefits it would produce. Steps should be taken at an early date to obtain the required number of subscribers, and once an exchange was established, we have no doubt the number of subscribers would increase,, and the cost to eaoh would then be substantially reduoed. And better afeill, the outcome in the near future would be that we should be granted telephonic communication with Napier daring the day. Only in this way can the isolation which hangs over the district like some hideous nightmaro be removed,—Guardian.
