NEW LOCAL INDUSTRY.

MESSRS. MARTIN AND WILLIA MS : KAITI SOAP WORKS. THE OPENING CEREMONY.

At the invitation o£ Messrs Martin and Williams, proprietors o£ the Kaiti Soap Factory, a largo number of citizens yesterday afternoon inspected the works and took part in the opening ceremony, which passed off most successfully, notwithstanding the unfavorable state of the weather. Amongst those present were His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Townley), Messrs Pyko, W. J. Cox, W. F. Crawford, W. H. Clayton, J. W. Whinray, G. Evans, a. Oman, J. Colley, T. Coleman, J. R. I Little, Watson, A. Sawyer, C. F. Lewis, G. I Lawless, Smith (2), Birrell, Hird, R. D. B, I Robinson, J. R. Redstone, and many others. A number of ladies were also pre-

sent. The town visitors left the Masonic Hoto corner at four o’clock, being driven to the works in two of Messrs J. E. Bedstone and Sons’ brakes. The factory buildings were gaily decorated with flags and hunting, and every effort wbb made by 'the proprietors to assure a successful opening. The proceedings commenced with the christening of the works a bottle of ohampagne, this interesting ceremony being performed by 'Miss Lynda Martin, amidst much cheering. The Mayor then shortly addressed the gathering. He heartily congratulated the proprietors on the energy and enterprise that they had shown in erecting such up to-date buildings and plant and bo hoped they would be handsomely rewarded for their efforts. The industry was most useful, and one which they could not well do without. The proprietors intended to supply the local market with , the best of household soap, as well as eater for the outside trade. The speaker i regretted that the weather was so wet for 1 the opening ceremony, but he was pleased to see so many present. He hoped to see the industry attended with every success. The buildings, although not of a very ornamental character, were bf a practical nature, and the large plant that had been fitted up was thoroughly up to date, and would euable a large quantity of soap to be turned out. If a good article was supplied there would be a stroug demand for the product of the works, and the industry I would be the means of employing a large number of hands. The Mayor concluded by calling for three cheers for Messrs Martin and Williams, to whom, he was sure, they all wished every success and prosperity. ' ' " F. Crawford said that .as an old

resident of the di3triot ho desired to add a few words of congratulation to the proprietors of the works on the enterprise they hod displayed. Ho oamo to Gisborne ovor thirty years ago and had soon it grow from a sand heap. It did one's hoart good to aoo the substantial industries whioh wore springing up and flourishing in our midst, and ho was sure that with tho energy and enterprise that Mosses Martin and Williams would briug to boar on tho soap industry that suooess would bo assured. He hoped that overy onoourogomont would be given locally to the industry. Mr J. W. Whinrny repliod on bohalf of Mossrs Martins and Williams, acknowledging tho many kind wishes whioh had been extended in rogard to the industry. Thors wore, ho said, always initial diuioulties to bo overcome with overy new industry, but they wore very hopefuls of sugoobs

in the present case. . Mr X. G. Lawless proposed tho health of Mias'* Lynda Martin, after whom the works have boon namod. Oapt Martin suitably responded. The visitors were each presented with a sample of tho,“ Lynda” brand of household soap, and all were loud in their praise of the excellence of tho article. Several gentlemen who hove had a lengthy experience in regard to the industry, expressed the utmost satisfaction with tho product, stating that it would be very hard to boat it, and ought to meet with a good demand. The proprietors of Che works are exceedingly fortunate in securing Mr James Gook as manager, aa that gentleman has had over forby years experience in soap making, both at Home and in New Zealand, and is well acquainted with the requirements of the trade. Mr Cook will be assisted by Mr J. X). Trent, who will also act as business manager. Xt is expected that the works will be able to turn out about sixty tons of soap per month. The machinery is throughly up-to-date, and includes an eight horsepower boiler, of colonial manufacture, a six horse-power engine, and a six hundred gallon per hour Taogyejpump. The soap vat, coolers, and other appliances are also of the best manufacture. Altogether- the factory is splendidly equipped, ana is in every way adopted for the production of a first class article. We wish the enterprising proprietors every success. \
