BOY CRIMIMALS.
(Per Press • Association.) Auckland, last night. Chief Detective Matsack made an inter*
eating' statement in the Police Court yesterday to Hr H. S. Wardoll, S.M., before whom Charles Beaton (16), Norman Edward Harris (15), and William Barnett J f (16) wore charged with breaking and \ entering the warehouse of Bichard K. Sinclair, aud stealing throo cigars and five boxes oi matches. Detective IVTarsack said
the charges were laid in an indictable form because accused had been previously convicted. He wfas sorry, to say that a considerable portion of,the house-breaking in Auckland wa3 committed by lads like j-; those in the dock, who thought that when they were brought into Court they would be discharged and told to be good boys. Mr Baume, who defended the boys, said the Magistrate could do all thait was nocesC, sary if they pleaded guilty. Committal for sentence would mean waiting three months in gaol. Mr Wardeil’s reply to Detective Marsack was that lads over 15 need not expect repeated chances to reform, but >he was very glad to give the boys an opportunity'of getting away from bad companions. If they did not take advantage of these chances they would j get no consideration. Accused pleade d j : guilty, and were committed for sentence.
