GISBORNE DEFLATED BY NEWTOWN.

MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY BY PONSFOBD.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. A large number of bowlers assembled on the Wellington Club’s green to-day to witness the play bstween the Newtown Club’s team which wou tho rink championship at tho recent Christchurch tournament and thß Gisborne team which won tho championship at Gisborne. The conditions were three games, two wins to count. Tho Wellington team, after a very close contest, suococdcd in carrying off the coveted honor. The feature of the day’s play was undoubtedly tho very fine play of Ponsford, the Gisborne skip. Indeed experienced bowlers expressed the opinion that bad his supports played up to form in the last few heads of the final game the result, would have been, different. Tho teams were:—Newtown: Wylie, Wiße, Price, Prince (skip). Gisborne: Martin, Coleman, Massey. Ponsford (skip). In the first game Gisborne went, off with the lead, and at the end of the Bth head had

scored 12 to 2, Massey and Ponsford playing particularly well. At the 12th head the game was 14 to 6. Newtown picked up on the 14th and 16th heads, and the game ended Gisborne 24, Newtown 15. Ponsford saved about 17 points in the last few heads. The play in the second game was more even, the home team doing best on the short heads. At the Bth head Newtown was 10 to Gisborne’s 7, and at the 10th the score was 10 all. At the 20th head Newtown stood 22, Gisborne 17. On the last head Newtown scored 2, the game ending 24 to 17. In the deciding game Gisborne led to the 10th head, tho score being Gisborne 8, Newtown 4. Then tho home team went ahead, finally winning by 21 to 14. Scores: Newtown two games, Gisborne one.
