I-lc urged the summoning of an assembly composed, of nobles, clergy,, burghers, and peasants. The Czar replied that personally he (was not reluctant to concede reforms agd abandon some of his prerogatives, if convinced that it was for the nation's .welfare ;i but the constitution of representative government .would only, embarrass, and not relieve the people, and therefore it w liis duty to stand sentry against demands.
A general strike has occurred at Slonim, ip the Grodno 1 district, in sympathy, with the St. Petersburg strikers. Fifty, arrests have been made.
It is announced that the Czar is convening a zemstvos parliament for the anniversary, of tlic date of the freeing of serfs. .Canon Chclmicki, of the i Chapter of Warsaw, interviewed, declared that he shudders at the thought of a revolution. An irresistible revolt of the people, in its infancy iWouid bn worse than "the French revolution. That fact “ was realised everywhere except "at St_n Petersburg ; hence the nobility, and middle classes were ,unanimious in demanding reforms.
