The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, FEBRUARY 21, 1905. THE STOCK TRACK.
.The state of things reported- at the .Cook County, Council yesterday,, in regard to the Eot-orua' stock track is not at all creditable to the Government. It forms a strong- proof- of lack -of business foresight, and thereis good grofumd for asserting that a gross breach of faith has been committed. ilp. this matter, we can let the member of. the district go free of the major portion of the .responsibility, for. ,we have the promise of the Premier himself to refer to. So many years ago that most people have now; almost forgotten the occasion* Mr. Seddon undertook to have the track completed. ,No doubt tt will be completed s,ome day, but at the present rate of progress, the necessary ten- miles to be opened up tvill not -be done within the lifetime of the members of the Government. The action of the Co.unty, Council' should at least shame the Government into making some attempt to fulfil their promise. In any ease, the Council lias arrived at a decision that Will he approved by the ratepayers. - But it does seem monstrous that Ministers should be making such handsome promises to the well-served South*, while failing to fulfil the meagre promises of productive works made to this district. .The Premier surely must have forgotten the stock track,, or- a charge ] of breach of faith .could not so readily bo made. The attitude of the Government in the matter, will now be Watched with interest.
