MINING FATALITY

Per Press Association. I Thames, last night. I A fatal mining accident occurred at the I Mascotte mine at Otanui, near Thames, I to-day. Henry Keploo, aged 38, married, I with fonr children, and his mate were I engaged widening a shaft, and had cut out I five feet to tho required size when a porJ.tion came away,, struck Peploo on the chest and knocked him backwards, pinning him to tho earth. He was killed instantaneously. His ribs were stove in in the region of the heart. His head was I also knocked about. An inquest was held this evening, when the evidence showed that the fall of earth was due to what is I known as soapy head. A verdict of accidental death was returned, with no blame attachable to anyone. The mining inspector gave evidence that all possible I precautions had been taken.
