The judge, Mr King, complimented the double B fiat basses on their display, but the trombones, he said, were not up to the mark. One player, he said, played a beautiful solo, but it was no test of ability, and accordingly did not get first prize. Mr King urged the difficulty of judging between men playing different solos of their own choice, and indicated the advisability of making solo pieces a test as well as the band pieces. The suggestion was received with applause. The first test selection, for which the maximum marks were 200, resulted as follows Wellington Garrison (Lieutenant T. Herd conductor), 189 marks, 1; Wanganui Garrison (T. Crichton conductor), 173, 2; Kaikorai (G. B. Laidlaw conductor), 168, 3. Waihi Federal (C. Trussel), 164; First Battalion, Auckland (P. H. Moore), 159 ; Auckland Garrison (G. F. Cater), 157; Hauraki (T. B. Booth) and Taranaki Garrison (F. MoConneli), 156; Ruahine Battalion (A. Lawrence), 153; Gisborne City (J. Chrisp), 132 ; Devonport (T. Adams), 123. [(Special to ,Gisborne .Times.)

There was a great crowd hearing the bands playing. Wellington came out on top, Wanganui second, and Kaikorai third, Gisborne scored next to last place. Evidently the people were not satisfied with the decision, thinking that Kaikorai should have been nearer first place.
