NEW CATHEDRAL
THE BANQUET.

Christchurch, last night.
At the banquet in connection with the opening of the new cathedral, Bishop Grimes proposed the toaßt of the visiting prelates. He .expressed a deep sense of gratitude. Arohbishop Oarr replied. He referred to the hospitality Bhown to the □relates all over the colony, and the interest taken in the proceedings by the Maoris, who offered him a chieftainship if he would, Hve amongst them ana a most memorable taDgi when be died. There was a very large congregation in the evening. Pontifical vespers were sung. The Bishop of Sale, Archbishop Carr, who laid the foundation Btone, performed the dedication ceremony and preached. He spoke of the multitude of sects that had arisen in modern times, all calling themselves the Church of Christ. Christ intended the Church established by himself to be one in loctrine, worship and government. He contended that the Roman Catholic Church was the true Church of Christ by Apostolic succession. Dr Grimes bestowed the Papal blessing, the ceremony being very imposing.
