Weliingson, last night. Mr W. S. Beid, Chairman of the Land Commission, is ill, and has been ordered ccmplote rest. It is understood that he has ‘resigned from the Commission. Napier, last night. At the Supreme Court to-day the jury were uuablo to agree in. the case of Charles Lassen, charged with carnally knowing a girl 13 years .and 3 months of age at Waiohaka, near Pahiatua. A new trial was ordered. Palmorston North, last night. A poll on tho proposal to raise a JE56,000 lean for a comprehensive waterworks scheme was held to-day. "Very little interest was taken. ' The loan was rejected by 388 to 172. Tho vote is regarded locally as showing a want of confidence in the local Borough Council. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day a motion was passed, urging the Government to get a special appropria tion from the next Parliament for the prosecution of the North Island Main Trunk railway with greater expedition than at present. It was decided to work up tho interest in the southern portions of the Island with that end in view. A committee was set up with a view of securing an area of ground as an inducement to the Government to place a dairy school and experimental station thereon.
