ARBITRATION ACT.
JPer Press 'Association.) Wellington, last night. The Trade and Labor Council discussed the clause dealing with underrate workers inserted in tho award recently given by the Arbitration Court in the Nelson carpenters ease, and the following resolution was carried unanimously: “ The Council strongly protest against the clause dealing with underrate workers inserted in the Nelson Carpenters’ award by the Arbitration Court recently,, and taking the power to grant or refuse permits out of the handa of the Union, thus making it possible - for any person to gain an entrance into & trade in this way, whether he is a carpenter or not. We consider it discloses a deliberate intention to flood the trade with incompetent men, and so lower the standard of efficiency, end in the long run to reduce wages. Moreover, the clauses are a serious infringement of the rights iof Unions, and a direct attempt to destroy their usefulness.”
