Sir Joseph Ward, who was spending I yesterday in Christchurch, received several I deputations that morning. Replying to I members of tho Utility Poultry Club, who 1 asked for concessions for the egg laying I competition, Sir Joseph expressed pleasure I at steps being taken to foster a new indusI try deserving of support. Ho would soe I what railway concessions could be given for birds travelling to and from competitions, and would at once authorise the conveyance of .materials on terms similar | to those obtained for railage of exhibition pens to poultry shows. A deputation of hairdressers’ assistants brought under the Minister’s notice the fact of some saloons leasing chairs, the result being that the lessees, though employing no labor, were pluced in the position of employers. The lessees were able to keep open at hours when employers were closed under the arbitration awurd. A majority of employers was against the practice. Sir Joseph promised to bring the matter before the Minister for Labor, saying ho thought Parliament would pro vide a remedy, but the Union should show its earnestness by preparing a petition for presentation to tho Ministor.
