The Premier returned on Saturday evening from a visit to the Murchison'aigd Central Buller, where he received, an enthusiastic reception, many travelling 30 miles over range’. In bis speech at Murchison, ho expressed satisfaction at the progress of settlement despite tho means of communication. He said Nelson and the coast had exported gold to the value of twenty-six millions, or more than a third of the total. He announced a new goldfields policy. Tbo Government had secured a very able geologist. Local bodies had no money to spend in prospecting. Elsewhere rich discoveries had been mads at a considerable depth. Government must do more. Geologists Bhould indicate whoro shafts or tunnels should -be sunk. Guided by geologists, assisted by science, they must make further discoveries. He showed how mineral wealth bad assisted in the general development. He received a vote of thanks and confidence in self and Government with cheers. Considerable capital is being invested in mining in Matakitaki, and the Premier commented on the discovery of over an ounce nugget on the railway works. The Premier received many deputations en route and in Nelson, aDd left for Wellington last night.
