The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, FEBRUARY 3, 1905. THE RUSSIAN REVOLT.

The cablegrams in regard to the coiidi.fuo.ir of a Hairs in. Russia Iras o ibocomo milder in tone, and indicate that the policy of murderous repression has triumphed for the present. There coukl really he no question as rto the immediate effect .when armed men .wore pitted against disorganised and unarmed people. When the military recklessly fired, witlyout regard l'or the ■ lives) of women an,d children, there was practically, nothing for the .workers to do but submit or. arm, and the latter was almost beyond consideration. The real interest in the situation row, is as :ta hew. matters will develop in the near future,. On the one hand, the JCzar is prepared to make considerable concessions to the workers, so long as they are taken as a matter of grace and not as a right unwillingly given. On the other side, we hear of the Nihilists being busy preparing for the execution of dark schemes of murder.. They, are said to ho conferring in London, and altogether a great deal is being made of Wbat is being done in that direction —the probability is that many of the so-called movements and designs cart he attributed to the imagination of those relating them.. It is not likely that Nihilists intent on murder, are g-oing ho advertise itheir movements, and thus deprive themselves of any chance of success in their fiendish mission ; nor is it likely the jauthpritiea will be ready to ‘ blab any secretly-gained information they may have as to the doings of theso miscreants.
