BAKERS’ CONFERENCE

At the bakers’ conference a delegate enquired if it was intended to ask the Government to regulate the price of bread. _The President replied in the negative. Mr Laurenson said until the scale of rates laid down ut the last conference was given [ a fair trial they should not worry the Government. So far as Dunedin was concerned, no increase was anticipated. Meanwhile they had been subjected to a good deal of adverse criticism through ignorance. The output was not the same years ago, consequently the cost of production had increased. Mr Budd said the scale worked well in Timaru. A committoo was appointed to consider the matter.

At the Master Bakers' Conference it was resolved to continue the present scale of prices as far as practical, namely:— Flour costing up to L 7 per’ton, bread to be sold for 5d ; between L 7 and LB, for s£d; between L 8 and L 9, for 6d ; between L 9 and LlO, for 6£d ; between LlO and Lll. for 7d ; between Lll and Ll2, for 7id ; between Ll2 and Ll 3, for Bd. Mr Thomson (Christchurch) brought up the matter of the millers supporting insolvent bakers, and cited a case of whore a cutting baker had only so far paid 3s 4d in the £, yet was being supported by tbe millers. Honest men could not compete in such cases. It was suggested that a motion should 4> o submitted next day.
