The directors recommend a dividend of 10 per cont for the year, and the issue of unallotted shares at 10s, making the paid-up capital £62,000. The Senate resolved on the motion of Professor P. B. Brown, by 12 to 7, to make application to the General Medical Council of Britain and Ireland to permit the substitution of a modern language for Latin in the preliminary medioal examine tion. The Senate throw out Mr Hogbon’s motion for the rearrangement of junior scholarship marks, making Latin not compulsory in science degrees. Mr Baume’s motion for a reduction of fees charged for degrees conferred by the University was deferred for a report next year by the Bogistrar. Dunedin, last night. Obituary : Mr John McNeil, a member of the Provincial Council, first obairman of the Clutha County Council, and first Mayor of Balclutha, aged 69. Decensed arrived in Otago by the Moultan in 1849. Thames, laßt night. A cargo of 140,000 hardwood sleepers arrived per barquentine St. Hilda from Newcastle for the Waihi-Paeroa railway works. Over a million foot of timber has been despatched to Australian ports during the week. Wairoa, yesterday. Hopa Karangaroa, charged with breaking and entering B. Vaughan’s store at Tahaenui and stealing 80s therefrom, has been committed to the Supreme Court at Napier. Joseph Martin, for wife desertion, was remanded to Napier. The weather is stormy. Heavy rain has fallen since Sunday. Oamaru, last night. An old man named William Hall, an old age pensioner, was found drowned in a creek at Kakanui yesterday. He was last seen alive on Friday afternoon.
