LATE NEW ZEALAND.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The Minister for Railways has issued a circular seeking information as to the quantity of grain on hand packed in bags weighing over 2001 b, in order that he may be in a position to determine whether it is possible to waive the provisiono of the bye-la.v coming into operation on February Ist, charging sacks containing more than 2001 b four times the ordinary rate. During the quarter ended December 31st tho postal revenue collected was £163,245, £82,023 being postal revenue and £81,222 telegraphic. The revenue for the quarter is £15,584 in excess of that for a similar period of the previous year. The Savings Bank deposits amounted to £1,361,253, and the withdrawals to £1,310,373. At a moating of the City Council tonight it was decided not to entertain the suggestion to set up an Appeal Board for tramway employees, and that no increase in tho present wages could be paid. The Mayor stated that it would be necessary before knowing whether the tramways were paying to have twelve months’ experience. Tho Council decided lo give the D.I.C. a temporary loase of the old corporation offices at a rental of L6OO per annum. The Company will carry on business there for the present.

The Harbor Board to-day decided to expend L2OO in the purchase of rocket life saving apparatus. The question establishing a second and low light at Pencarrow Head was before the 800 rd. It was resolved that if the Board could get Parliamentary sanction for the expenditure to spend L 2.500 on a light.

Tho Mayor to-day informed a deputation that ho could not see his way clear to call a public meeting to protest against the Russian atrocities.

Large shipments of butter have been sent forward to London* this season, a record being carried by the Shaw Savill steamer Gothic with 54.,438 boxes. Auckland, last night. The Governor loft Auckland for Christohurch to-day, accompanied by Captain Brnithwaite, A.D.C., Mr Waterfield, private secretary, ahd Captain H. Boscawen, honorary A.D.C. Lord Plunket is expected to return to Auckland early in March, and he will be accompanied by Lady Plunket. The Governor has expressed himself delighted with his stay in Auckland.

There were three applications for the position of mathematical master at the Grammar School. Mr C. J. A. Griffin, who was educated at the Ohristohcircb Boys’ High School and is a graduate of the New Zealand University with mathematical honors, was appointed. Mr Griffin held the Sir George Grey scholarship at the University College and senior mathematical scholarship of the University. Two applications for nomination for Rhodes scholarship have been received by the Professoral Board of the Auckland University College.

Thomas Trudgeon, a miner, who was admitted to the hospital on Monday suffering from ptomanic poisoning, died tonight. At a meeting this evening of those favorable to the formation of a branch of the Political Labor League, presided over by the Hod. W. M. Bolt, it was resolved that the meeting accept the platform and constitution of the Political Labor League of New Zealand, and resolve to establish a branch of the League in Dunedin. Mr W. Hood was elected president pro tern.

7 Christchurch, last night. The New Zealand Utility Poultry Club decided to-night to accept the offer of the “ Lincoln College Board of Governors to l atrange for holding the club’s proposed : egg-laying competition at the college. A 1 committee was elected to frame rules for the competition, with the view oi.startiDg at an early date. The committee of the Canterbury Crickot Association has decided (to reply to a letter from the Auckland Association that Canterbury will play elevten men against the Australian eleven. j At the annual meeting of the; Canterbury Industrial Association to-night, reference was made to the proposed international exhibition, members speaking in congratulatory terms of the proposal, and expressing confident hopes of i£s success. An opinion was voiced by several that £20,000 suggested by the Premier for expenses would not bo enough. Mr W. W.
