FOILED BURGLARS.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Howick was the scene of operations for burglars at an early hour this morning. The victim was Mr G. Sellwood, storekeeper, who was awakened by hearing a alight noise in the adjoining room. On making investigations he saw a light in the shop, and two men busily engaged emptying the till. There was a trap standing outside the shop, and what Mr Sellwood took to be a third man. The intruders took their departure suddenly. On Sellwood calling to his wife for hi 3 gun thoy immediately blew out the light and jumped over the counter, scattering jars and other articles in all directions. Getting outsido they sprang into the waiting trap and drove off before any attempt at securing them could be made. Examination of tho shop showed that the burglars had burst open the front door with a jemmy, ond before commencing operations had emptied three bottles of lemonade. Fortunately all that was missed was about 3s, which was in the till, the thieves having apparently not had time to tamper with the stamps and cash boxes, where a considerable amount of money was kept.
