CITY BAND CONCERT.

The open-air concert given last evening in the Xe JRau College grounds by tho City Band was largely attended, many visiting bowlers being present. A capital programme of varied music was provided, and each item was enthusiastically re- . ceived. The City Band, whioh has attained | excellent proficiency, played several seleo- . tions in a musician-like manner, including “ Challenge ” and the maroh “ Durhams,” j whioh piece displayed the ability of this ! capable organisation, much attention being given to the forte passages and crescendos throughout the pieoe. Miss Poswillo gave a most sympathetic rendering of “ I trust you still,” and received hearty applause. Mr W. McCarthy’s cornet solo, “ Give me back my heart,” was capably rendered, and secured for him the good opinion of all present. Whitely obtained a well deserve'vo-jcore for his singing of “ Vanity,” wtJKFwas given in his usual good style. The instrumental quartette, “ Oberon,” by Messrs McCaskill, McKersey, Spurdle and Chrisp, was one of the gems of the evening. Mies Law gained a, decided encore for her artistic'interpretation of the song, “ Wind in the Trees,” and responded with “My Beloved Queen,” whioh suited her voice admirably. Mr Hale gave an excellent rendering of “ Let me like a soldier fall,” whilst Mr Zaohariah oreated endless

amusement hy his comic Bpeoialties, for which he was vociferously encored. Mr Clifford’s piano solo, “ Luorezia Borgia," was muoh appreciated, as also was Mr Newton’s song, “The Tar’s Farewell.” The conoert, which was in aid of the City Band fund, was ably conducted, and re : fleeted muoh oredit on the eaergetio secretary, Mr J.
