SHOCKING FATALITY.
IY.QUNGi MAN DROWNED AT WHATATU TjUi
!A young man was 'drowned la«t evening at Whatatntu under circumstances that intensified the 'distressing nature of the occurrence. Our correspondent states that Mr Rae, aged about 19, a brother of Mr ‘John Kao, a well-known carter of Wlvatat.utu, went after tea with the intention ol having a bathe in the river. Ho was in the employ of Mr W. Hay, sheep-farmer, and went to a spot in ihe Waingaroimia river, not far distant.
He was accompanied by. Messrs Edwin Goldsmith and Harry Colling®. Rae jumped in feet foremost, and did not rise again to the surface. AU efforts to rescue him proved unavailing, diving for tlio body not being successful. Other aid was obtained, and eventually, Mr T, Whano fished it out.
Deceased was an industrious young man, and was thought a great deal of by his employer and all who knew him.
The body, was conveyed to the residence of tho brother.
