CONSTANTINOPLE, Sept, 12 e

Tne beauty experts have had a severe set-hack in the Turkish capital since the Sultan’s, thirst for knowledge led him to look into ,the ingredients of cosmetics and pomades. Learning that a large majority of these articles, dear to the heart of .woman, are mixed with pork lard, Abdul Hamid at once put a royal prohibition upon the importation and sale of such “ impurity..’’ _ ilc invoked the command of the Koran, bidding the faithful abjure all things appertaining to a pig. Manufacturers of soaps and other toilet articles have been notified that only such as are exempt from all suspicion of the unclean will be acceptable. Small merchants who trade in other countries are buying up the unorthodox merchandise prohibited by the Sultan. ROME, Sept. 12.

When King Victor Emmanuel was visiting the exposition of Undine, the shoemaker Demetrio Canal, well known for his propaganda of anarchistic doctrines, presented a letter; to him, in which he encouraged the King to continue in the way of progress, civilisation, and liberty. In addition to- presenting the letter he said to the King : “ Go forward, and you will merit the praise of humanity.” The King accepted the letter with a smile. The shoemaker Canal is known in Paris, where he has recited verses of his own composition at literary gatherings in the Latin Quarter.
