Still uuotner tarewell sucial to report. Miss N. Whito who has boen assistant toachor in tho Native school for two years, on tho ovo of her departure was invited to a social and dance by her many friends. As usual at these gatherings a most enjoyable ovaning was spent, singing, dancing, and ping-pong being kept up to a late hour. Miss White, during her stay here, has become a general favorite, and has at all times come forward roadily to assist in all our little social gatherings, and she will bo greatly missed. She was presantod with a handsome serviette ring. Mr J. Thornton is to be congratulated upon the way he made all arrangements for the suc-
cessful carrying out of the social. Mr Buchanan, managor of the Trading Co.’s store, Tokomaru, had a good display on Christmas Eve, having a large Christmas tree in his store with all sorts of good things artistically arranged thereon. Mr Buchanan is to be complimented on his originality. The display was much admired. On Christmas Day a cricket match, married v. single, was played, tho latter proving thomselves to be the bettor team for the first time in Tokomaru cricket history. The victors mado 72 in their innings; W. Oates 26, G. Oates 20. and McKenzie 10, being the highest scorers ; Messrs H. H. Fairlio and Wyllie dividing the bowling honors with five wickets each. Tho married side made 36 in their timings, just half tho score of their op-
ponents; P. White 7, not out, and Heweteon 10, were the highest acorers. W. Oates, jun., took four wickota, and Johnstone, a new arrival in.the district, took six wickets. If this player stays in the district he will be quite an acquisition to tho club, and a much needed one. Several married men, competitors in the following day’s sports, preferred to stand out of the game. The annual sports wore held as usual on Boxing Day, Tho weather was ideal, tho attendance much larger than usual, and tho entries were much better than expected. The handicapping was very good and the finishes close, all tending to make tho sports very successful. Visitors from Tolago Bay, Waipiro, Tuparoa, and most of the stations at the back wero on the ground, many of them driving long distances, which say 3 volumes for the condition of our roads. Mr H. H. Fairlie, secretarv, and Mr Thornton had all the nnrV- mnll in laonrl nnrl flnaot*U(l
business - well m hand and deserve great praise for tho mannor in which they carried their work through, Mr E. Hewitson, as handioapper, whiio not able to accomplish the almost impossible task of satisfying everybody, showed excellent judgment all through. Mr W. Oates, as starter, appeared to do his best; in the championship race the start was not a good one, and Mr Buchanan was in a measure left, or at anyrato got an indifferent start, The judges, Messrs W. Mill and J Hales got through their duties iu a vory satisfactory mannor, Messrs Hindmarsh and Murphy being unavoidably absent. Mr J. H. Jamison had the catering in hand, and with tho assistance of Mrs Smith, his Bister, and Mr J. Earle, it goes without saying that nothing was left undone.
