TERRIBLE ACCIDENT.

LAD DRAGGED BY PONY, AND KILLED, A shocking occurrence, which terminated fatally, took place at Makauri yesterday, resulting in the death of the nine-year-old .son of Mr John Walker.

The hoy, a bright young fellow, was riding a pony bare-backed, using a repe for a bridle. The boy was a good rider, bub the pony stumbled in a hole in the paddock, and fell, the rider being thrown to the ground. It is not likely that any harm would have resulted from this, but the little fellow’s foot was caught in the rope rein, and the animal taking -fright, galloped round the paddock, dragging the hoy behind. Mr and Mrs Walker witnessed the shocking occurrence, but although in a state of great distress and eagerly seeking do do something to rescue the. boy from his perilous plight, they were powerless to help. Eventually the boot was pulled off, and the poor little fellow was released,- hut he had been very badly knocked about, and was then beyond tile reach of human aid. Medical aid was speedily summoned, and very promptly available, 'hut the hoy died thirty minutes after being released, about a minute before the doctor arrived.- 1-Ie was unconscious when picked up,, and did not regain his senses. The accident happened in the paddock in front of the house. The pony was one which the lad had been accustomed to ride, a lid olid Which' 110 had ridden to Waerenga-a-hika a few ’days before. Deep sympathy is felt for the parents in their hour of grief. An inquest will be held this morning, at 11 o'clock,
