CHESS TOURNAMENT.

Per Press Association. Wellington, last night. The following games were played in the chess tournament:— ' Three outstanding games in the third round were played to day. Games between Forsyth and Grierson and John Mason and Mackay were unfinished, and further postponed. Adair v. Edwards: In this game Edwards made a good fight, but succumbed to Adair’s twenty-fifth move.

Fourth round results, tho first-named in each game having the opening move : 0. Pleasants v. Grierson, queen’s gambit declined. Tho champion was at odb period sorely prossed for a timo, and had to make eleven move 3 in thirteen minutes. This cost him a minor piece. Pleasants later on bore down on a castled kiDg with doubled rocks, and by giving up a rook for a bishop mated at the forty-seventh move. The game was entered for the brilliancy prize. Miles v. Forsyth, bishop’s gambit: There was some fine pawn play in this game, both players queening at move 49. Forsyth, however, forced an exchange of queens, and this giving him a clear pawn which could not bestopped, he resigned at move 52, Adair v. Woodford,

French defence : Adair soon got his rooks into effective operation, and won in 18 moves. The game was entered for the brilliancy prize. Edwards v. Friberg: Drawn at move 51. Brown v. W. E, Mason, centre counter game : Brown resigned when in a hopeless position at move 28. Sandford v. Connell, Hungarian defence: Connell quickly developed a good position, but by an oversight lost a queen and the game, which he should really have won. Davies v. Mackay, Buy Lopez: Davies won in 61 moves after Madgay had lost a chance of drawing. J. Mason v.
