WAERENGA-A-HIKA SPORTS.
Sports in aid of the Gisborne Hospital were held in Mr Hall’s paddock, Waerenga-a-hika, on Boxing Day, and were largely attended. Every event was keenly contested, and the results reflected credit on the Sports Committee. Following are the results of the events : Girls race : Mami Clay 1, Floury Hylands 2; jumping {for horses : McKenzie’s The Sailor 1, D. McKenzie's Irish L iddie 2 ; 150 yards handicap : 2; wood-cropping: Howell 1, Armstrong 2, Tye 3 ; 2z u yards handicap : Puflett 1, Taylor 2, Witty 3 ; hop, step and jump : Eaharuhi 1; settlers race : Jones 1, Sharp 2, Edwards 3; 440 yards handicap: Eoderick 1, Pilcher 2 ; Native race : Eangi 1; Broughton 2 ; wrestling on horseback : Kerr 1, Barber 2; half-mile: Pilcher 1, Bingham 2 ; putting the shot: Napia, 34ft 4in, 1, G. Witters, 33ft Bin, 2; throwing cricket ball: S. Ensor 1; greasy pig: Hami Kara 1. The result of the sports speaks well for the committee, and the close finishes of most of the races must have been very satisfactory to the handicappers.
