A SAD STORY.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night.

Esther Knopp, aged 17 years, unmarried, employed as a domestic servant, was delivered of a child at the house of a friend with whom she was staying yesterday morning, the child’s dead body being found in a clothes box in lior bedroom some hours afterwards. An inquest was commenced this afternoon, but adjourned to permit tho attendance of tho mother, Tho evidence tendored showed that the girl had denied being enciente, and had made no preparation for confinement. The child died from tho want of proper attention at birth.

A couple of whales were disporting themselves in tho bay on Saturday. At Holy Trinity Church on Christmas morning Captain Whiteley sang as a solo, ‘•The People Who Walk in Darkness,” from “ Tho Mossiab,” and in the evonmg Mr J. East rendered “ Comfort Ye ” and ‘Every Valley Shall be Exalted.” On Sunday morning Miss Williams sang “ He Shall Feed His Flock.” Miss Hyet-t contributed tho solo in tho evening, “ Como Unto Me,” and a quartette was also rendered by Misses Hyc-tt and Williams and Messrs Whitely and Sidebottom.
