Tho arbitration group in the French Parliament has received a letter from Mr Grainger, as Agent Goueral for South Australia, in which he thanks thorn for the hospitality accorded during the recent visit to Paris. Fie suggests the moment is opportune to ccaso using New Caledonia as a ponal settlement. Such a decision would increase tho island’s prosperity. Australia would be ever gratoful for the friendly consideration and feelings. The letter has been forwarded to the Committee for Foreign Affairs. Received 11.7 p.m., Dec. 23. Sydney, Dec. 23.
Captain Rason, the Commissioner of the Now Hebrides, strongly contrasts the generous monetary assistance givon by France to French spttlers with the way British enterprise is hampered. The French aro making fine use of the high subsidies. The French New Hebrides Company reconstructing, aud receives sixteen thousand sterling annually from Government. Captain Rason looks forward to increased activity on the part of the French in the future. Sailed, 3 p.m., the Mokoia; the Diadem, for Portsmouth, with reiiof crews. Goode Island, Dee. 23. The Aparima, bound from Samarang to Auckland, passed, and reported ail well.
