I-.lr Turner, the local inspector ot stack, lias advised the Department that- the disease among horses here |(in his opinion) really is the African .epidemic of pink-eye. The Canterbury dairymen last night decided that an insurance fund be established to be called 1110 North Canterbury Dairy Stock Insurance Fund, to assist those who have dairy cattle condemned by the Government.

A serious attempt is being made to improve the river Avon. A meeting of citizens yesterday adopted a .scheme by the Mayor for the formation of a Board selected from the local bodies to manage the river and expend money in hand for its improvement. F. K. Robereson, Government veterinarian, has decided that the disease now troubling horses here is true pink-eye, hut of a benign form. Twenty-four horses in one large stable were attacked within five days. There have been reported cases in many of the counLry districts.
