SECONDARY EDUCATION

J Per Press Association. •£- Jt Wellington, last night. V\t the distribution of prizes at the Wellioeton Collego yesterday, certain remarks mado by Professor Browo, of Victoria College, examiner in Latin, drew & reply from Mr Seddon, who was present. Professor Brown, in bis report, said as long as Education Board scholarships wero limited to two years it would bo impossible to provido an ideal secondary course, as tho ■ curriculum had to be arranged to suit the brightest;-pupils.- A similar defect was noticeable’ in tho National scholarships recently established, though not so marked. To attempt to prepare n boy for a University couvso in two years was a farce and a sham. Until it was recognised that it required four years, and in most cases five, bo doubted whether the secondary education of the colony would cease to be what it now is, superficial and unroal. Tho Premier, referring to these statements, said -if tho results were as stated by Professor Brown, the soonor the matter was taken into serious consideration the ) hotter. In regard to National scholarships 4 bo was quite prepared to provide whatover was to tho good of the colony. If increased provision were necessary to meet tho requirements of secondary education, he was siini tho people would be willing to do justice. ,Mr Seddon then mentioned in regard to th\e training of teachers that the Govornmontyntended to allow means for the establishment of training colleges in connection w,!th University colleges at Auckland an-t Wellington. It was also proposed thaF the Normal schools at Christchurch -'and Dunedin should bo placed on a si tnilar footing.
