THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS
THE FIRST TEST MATCH.
ENGLAND WINS BY FIVE WICKETS.
By Telegraph— Press Association—Cppyrigh Sydney, D 'C. 17« The Herald says Trumper exhibited particularly entertaining cricket. His runs wero amassed without giving a chance. Trumper roseivtd assistance from Armstrong and Hopkins, though ho obtained the lion’s Bhare oi the runs. That such a performance should havo been put up on the fourth and fifth days of the match was un excellent testimony of the quality" and lusting powers of the wicket. Unfortunately Trumper could get no one to remain .vita him as he was batting sufficiently long enough tu achievo records. In their second innings the Englishmen for threo hours played a most cautious garno, as shown by the average rato of scoring, a fraction over 40 an hour, though the factor thereto was tho excellent bowling of Howell. Hayward played a perfect in ; , nings, and with him aud the Yorkshireman '
still undisposed of the visitors have the game in their favor. Notwithstanding that the wicket is showing signs of wear, the finish may be a good one.
The Daily Telegraph says the principal credit of Australian success bolorjged to Trumper. When the Englishmen wont in Howell and Armstrong, especially Howell, bowled magnificently on a pitch little, but not much, the worse for wear. With four wickots down for 82 the position became exciting, but Hirst after being missed twice rendered good assistance to Hayward. Excepting Hayward none of the English batsmen did themselves justice, probably tho result of over-auxiety, but the largest factor was the bowling of Howell and Armstrong. In Bpite of two lost chances tho fielding was admirable. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright
Received 3.30 p.m., Deo. 17. Sydney, Dec. 17. There was splendid weathor and a cool, Btrong bresze. The attendance was meagre. Hayward and Hirst set about securing the remaining 72 runs required to win the match, Howell and Armstrong bowling. Several changes were tr?ed, and the batsmen looked like getting the necessary runs between them. As Hayward approached the oentury Hirst finessed to give his partner a chance for threo figures. Hayward just entered the nineties when he stepped out to Saunders, Kelly stumping him. Five for 181.
Bosanquet followed, and Hirst having got his half century continued to slam the bowling, and made the winning hit, England being victorious by five wickets.
