By Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright

Received 1,6 -a.m., Dec, 17. Sydney, Doo. 16. Tho city is lively to-night. Largo crowds were massed in front of tho various newspapor offices, watchiug the postiog of returns. There is a good deal of good humoured rowdyism. The roturns are coming to hand oxtremely slowly. At 11.15 tho only complete return in is that of Wost Sydnoy, where Mr Hughes (Labor) has been elected by a good majority. Mr Reid coraplotoly out-distanced his opponents in Llast Sydney, loading tho Labor candidate by over 3000. The latest figures place Sir Wm, Lyne in a safe position with a lead of 800. Watson, tho Labor Leader, is secure. Edwards, of South Sydney, one of the Opposition seats, considered in danger, appears to have tho Labor candidate well beaten, and Bruco Smith, at Parkos, whore vote-splitting threatened another Opposition seat, has a good lead. Otherwise, judging from tho very incomplete figures to hand, the parties appear to be fairly well holding their own. Tho lady candidate’s position is not bright- ' City and Suburban returns for the three vacancies in tho Senate givo the Frootrado hunch a long lead, tho only one other in the running being Griffiths, Labor Protectionist. Reoeived 1.18 a m., Dec 17 Sydnoy, Deo 16. Reports from other Statos show that the polling has been hoavy, the feature being the froodom oxorcisod in tho franchise. There are no returns yet from South Australia, Wost Australia, or Queensland. In Victoria tho majority of the returns are very incomplete. The only complete ones are North Melbourne, where Mr Higgins has boon returned, and Yarran, where Mr Tudor has been returned. Dr. Quick is safe for Bsndigo. The Melbourne seat looks like going to a Labor candidate, Dr. Malonoy having a good lead from Sir Malcolm McEacheroOpposition soots at Wannon and Grauiphians are also endangored, Ministerialists and Labor are both holding their own well for tho other seats. From Tasmania tho only return ehowa that Fysh’s soat is in danger.
