The dredge which tho Bluff Harbor Board proposes to have built in the Old Country is estimated to cost £26,000, and will be fitted with buckets and suction pump. Experiments on the St. Lawrence river have demonstrated that a ship may be stopped within a distance do greater than its own length by means of 11 gates ” or “ wings ” hinged to the side of tho ship. These, when it is desired to check the foiward motion of the ship, are projected horizontally from the sides. The wings consist of heavy plates of steel. By the aid of their tariff, American manufacturers were able to charge their own people from 20 to 260 per cent more for goods than they were ready to sell the same articlo for to foreigners, remarked Mr Fcwlds in his address to his constituents. A duty on foodstuffs must necessarily increase the cost of living in Great Britain. There were no figures which, treated honestly, showed that British trade was declining. Of course, there was a gross increase in the returns from the United States as compared with those of the United Kingdom, which was due to increased population. The royalty on pig iron in France was Sd per ton, in Germany 6d, and in England 4s 6’i but in the States there was no royalty at 1 all.
