Massey Watson, whoso failure in 1898 will *be remembered chiefly on account of tho part two fierce bulldogs played in it, received his discharge from bankruptcy in tho Supremo Court to-day. Ho is at present gum-digging, inakiDg JG3O a year and receiving £OO a year from his family. Ono of tho best business sites in tho city, known as Brunswick Mart, Queen street, was sold at auction to-day for £14,000, equivalent to 41337 93 per foot frontage. Bidding was spirited. The purchaser was Mr James Hardie, of Auckland, Another Queen street property was sold privately at £4OO a foot. NAPIER, last night. An eight-roomed house at Awatoto, owuod and occupied by J. Broadbent, was totally demolished by fire early this morn-' ing. Heavy rain saved the wool-washing works adjoining. The insurances on the house are £2OO and on the contents £l2O, in the New Zealand. WELLINGTON, last night. Margaret Fletcher, aged 81, died at tho Hospital from the ofi'eets of burns sustained while lifting a kettle off tho fire. OAMARU, last night. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day l , before Major Kcddell, S.M., John Frew, an old age pensioner, on two charges of obtaining a renewal of pension wiifnily by a false statement, was fined £lO, with 7s costs on each charge, and ordered to refund £36 wrongfully obtained.
