GISR9RNE ROWING CLUB’S TRIAL , FOURS.

:}, Two beats of the Gisborne Rowing Club’s trial fours were got off last evening. The first race was botween O. HanseD, str J. Thomson, str Hamilton, 3 W. Johnson, 3 Welch, 2 Wilson, 2 Sharp, bow Sargisson, bow Tho latter wont to tho post favorites, and uphold tho general opinion. A close race resultod to tho footbridge, Thomson having a short length in hand from the start. From tho bridge out Hansen fell away, leaving Thomson to win in good stylo by a length. G. Buscko thon met the vetornn Donkin, and with a well-trained crew behind him, Buscke was first homo by a length and a half, both crews being oil out at the finish.; The crows wore ; < G. Bnscke, str Donkin, str A. E. Smith, 2 Pettio, 3 Swinnorton, 3 Sharland, 2 Grinlinton, bow Bridges, bow To-morrow ovening the first round will be eonoludod, Harding rowing C. Busoke, and P. Bayly rowing C. Adair.

POVERTY BAY ROWING CLUB’S FOUR-OARS.

The first of tho series of four-oar races hold by tho Povorty Bay Rowing Club for tho trophies donated by Mr B. S. Cox, took placo laat evening. The eourso was on tho Taruhoru over the mile distanco, weather and tidal conditions being highly ■ favorable. The opposing crews were: A. J. Pool, str A. W. Kirk, str A. MeConnoll, 3 C. E. Kirk, 3 E. Newton, 2 Lou. Tato, 2 W. Pritohard, bow Lon. Tato, bow

An excellent Btart was effected, both crews gripping *ko water well together. For tho first quarter of a tnilo tho boats remained lovel, neither being able to gain tho slightest advantage. This position was maintained to tho bridge, when Kirk’s crew began slowly to forgo ahead. Slowly but surely Kirk increased his slight load, and tho last half-mile saw aclipking “go,” Pool’s crow sticking to tho loading boat liko a leech. Nearing tho post both crews spurted, but Kirk’s crow was not to be denied, socuring a victory by a baro half length. This evening tho second hoat will be decided, when A. Kirk (str), J. Morrissey (3), J. Rodorick (2), and E. Roderick (bow) meet A., Pritohard (str), J. Brooking (3), G. Peterson (2), and D. Roderick (bow). A good contest should ensuo.
