CHATHAM ISLANDS,

Per Press Association. Christchurch, last night. When Mr Laureneon, was at

the Chathams, ho was informed by the Maoris resident-there that the local Maori Council was doing good work, the enforcement of sanitary regulations adopted by that body had had a highly beneficial effect. The fleath rate, which was formerly high, especially amongst young children, had been appreciably diminished, and there had been no deaths of infants since the Council began its operations.

One day last week a shoal of almost 70 black fish came ashore at Matarakau, in the nor|Sh of the main island of ‘the Chathams. The fjsh were in - good' condition! and most of them contained a largo quantity of oil, but, as the settlers had no appliances for trying-out, most of it had been wasted.
