His Lordship Bishop Lanihan was a through passenger to Auckland by the Mokoia on Saturday, having abandoned the overland journey with his motor car. Mr Vincent Pyke, manager of tho Bank of New Zealand, who has been on a visit to Australia, returned to Gisborno by tho Mokoia.
On Saturday morning at tho meeting of tho Teachers’ Institute, Mr A. Crawford, of the Gisborne District High School, was the recipient of a handsome present iu the form of a sot of cutlery, from tho toachers of the district, on tho occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr Rowley, the President of tho Institute, in making the presentation, referred in eulogistic terms to Mr Crawford’s sterling qualities, and tho esteem in which he is held by the teachers in tho district. Mr Crawford suitably responded, thanking the teachers for their present. Mr J. B. Kells, of tho firm of Messrs Common, Shelton and Co., and Messrs James Maefarlane, and C. J. Parker, local sheepfarmers, were outward passengers by the Taluno yesterday evening. A most enjoyable social evening was spent at the residence of Mr R. Cole, Whataupoko, on Saturday evening last, Where some 20 guests assembled to oSer their congratulations and best wishes to Mr A. Crawford, of the Gistorne District High School, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. Tho toast of the evening was proposed by the. host, who paid a high tribute to Mr Crawford’s many estimable qualities. Messrs Woodward, Ellis, C. H. Evans, W. Gibson, Dr. Buckeridge also bore testimony to the high esteem in which Mr Crawford was held throughout the district. Mr Crawford suitably responded. During the evening, an excellent musical programme was submitted.
Mr J. N. Williams, of Waipiro, who has been selected to represent Hawke’s Bay in the annual Interprovincial cricket match against Wellington, at Napier, on tho 18th, 19th, and 22nd of this month, left for Napier by the Te Anau last night. It is to be hoped the ex-Eton man will get going in the big match, and give Napior spectators a sight of tho fine batting form he has so consistently shown in this district.
Mr Jame 3 Christie, mentioned as the secretary of the New Zealand Association in Pretoria, was at one time editor of the Hawke’s Bay Herald, and also on the literary staff of the Otago Daily Times. He is a brother of Mr W. L. Christie, now of Bristol,, who had the distinction of being tho first medical graduate of the New Zealand University, and also the first to get its M.D. degree. He was the earliest New Zealand student to win the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons.
