MACLAREN’S DEFENCE.
RESIGNS HIS PAID POSITION,
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrigb; Received 12.22 a.m., Dee. 14. i London, Dec. 13.
At tho Lancashire County Cricket Ciub moeting Maclaren announced his resignation of his paid post, having accepted a business engagement in the North of England. Ho thought it would not affect his playing. Ho regretted there had been ill-feeling in connection with his team in Australia, but he had to go without two men whom he wanted. If Rhodes had been playing in the second test match it would have been over in one day. A certain section in the South of England sought to make out that he (Maclaren) wa’s making a great deal of monoy out of Australian tours. He assured them that he never made a halfpenny out of the three tours. The last time he told the Melbourne Committee he must have his wife’s expenses. With regard to the present tour of Warner’s team, he had no illfoeling against Marylebone or the team, but did not intend to remain silent if Marylebone were going to tako upon themselves the crickot affairs of England without consulting the men who were players of standing. The chairman wished Maclaren had left some things unsaid. He hoped personal matters would be swept into oblivion.
