GISBORNE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

ANNUAL CONCERT. A very onjoyablo concert was givon in the Theatre lioyal last night by tho pupils of the Gisborne District High School, assisted by several of our leading vocalists. The hull was crowded, many being unable to gain admission. Tho record attendance mußt have given great satisfaction to the School Committee, the masters of the Gisborne District School, and all who assisted to make tho concert such a success.

The programme submitted wus greatly enjoyed by all present, and reflected credit on the pupils and their instructors. Tho three items in the lirst part of the programme by the Standard I. children and ttie action song by the iufants were received with much applause. Miss Hilda Hogg recited “ The iingiish Flag ” with good effect, and Miss Hazel Harding and Master Leslie Bright were very successful in dancing an Irish jig. Mr W. J. Barlow greatly pleased the audience with tiis song, j “The Little Hero,” whilst Mr Zachariah 1 made a great hit with his comic song, f “The Dandy Colored Coon,” for which lie was three times recalled. Tho action song “ Bells,” by tho infants, was an excellent numbor, into which the young people entered with spirit. . Tho School Cadets gave a good display, of physical drill, whilst the bayonet exercises wore also well pciformed. Little Miss Jessie Nicholson brought the house down with her song “ I Want to Buy Heaven,” which was prettily rendered. Tho second part of the programme was equally as successful as the first, and each was enthusiastically received. The senior girls appeared to advantage in tho Flower songs, which opened the second haif, while Mr Hunter, who was in good voice, gave an excellent rendering or “ The Yeoman’s Wedding Song.” The Standard 111. boys manipulated the dumh-belis in good style, and the fancy drill by the girls of the upper form was a most attractive item. Mr Hill was .three times recalled for his coon songs, and Master Frank Hildreth made a favorable impression with the recitation "The Sailor’s Yarn.” Other excellent items were the exhibition of Indian clubs by the senior giris, Swedish drill by junior girls, wand drill by upper boys, and songs by the senior boys and girls. A recitation, entitled “ Who Shall Be Queen,” by seven girls, was given with good effect, those taking part being Miss Nellie Thomson (Queen), and Misses Lorrie Herrick, May Moore, Ivy Nis&ett Myrtlo Moore, Millie Winter, May Han' sen, and Cora Wheeler. The programme conceded by the rendering of the National Anthem by the pupils. The dresses of the children reflected the utmost credit on the parents. Tho pupils were well and neatly dressed, and a great deal of time and attention appeared to have been stowed upon them. The children entered heartily into the spirit of the performance, and recognising that it was their evening they tried to exeel themselves. The teachers, and especially the headmaster, Mr Rowley, spared no pains to promote the success of the concert, and one alj must have been gratified with the result,
