ST. MARY’S CONVENT.
CONCERT TO HIS LORDSHIP BISHOP LENIHAN.
Last evoning the yupila of St. Mary’s Convent school entertained His Lordship Bishop Lonihan at a concert in the Academy of Music. There was a Jurgo and appreciative audience, and the programme set bnforo them reflected great credit on the children, and their teachers, the Sisters of Morey. After the opening chorus, “ Welcome,” which was given in an pleas ing manner by the pupils, His Lordship received several presentations and an address. Miss L. Power, on behalf of the pupils, presented ML Lordship with aQ address, and Miss Maynard and Miss Martin asked his acceptance of a purse of sovereigns and a flora! bouquet. A pianoforte duet from “ Faust,” was prettily rendered by Misses Somervell and Liddell. I Miss D. Booth gavo u violin solo, 11 Adeste Fidelea,” which was much appreciated. This was followed by the cantata “Too Bad,” in,which the following took part : Judith, Miss L. Power ; Betsy, Miss K. Marlin ; Mother, Miss N. Martin ; Fairy, Miss P. Maynard ; Nurse, Miss E. Law. Tho acting of the young people in this piece was very clever, and was greatly enjoyed by all present. Tney knew their parts thoroughly, and deserved great praise for the clever interpretation they gave. Miss Power was particularly noticeable for tho manner in which she sustained tho largo part allotted to her, A pianoforte duet “I! Bacio,” by Misses Nicholson and Maynard, was an excellent number, as also was tho solo “ Island of Dreams,” which wns sweetly rendered by Miss E. Law. Miss L. Power charmed tho audience with a violin solo, " Lucrezia Borgia,” and later in the evening gave a clever recitation entitled '* Henry of Navarro.” Miss Liddell was much applauded for her pianoforto solo. “ Irish Diamonds,” A very pretty dance was given by Misses Siinson, Martin, and Power, tho young ladies showing great proficiency in the art. Mis 3E. Law was very successful in tho song “ The Carnival.” A short drama, ontitled “ Ernseliff Hill," was staged, the several parts being splendidly taken by tbo following pupils : Countess, Miss Maynard; Miss Sinclair, Mis 3 Martin ; Miss Hamilton, Miss Law : Anriotto, Miss Po ’r; S>o hi a, Mica Booth; Maid, Miss Fernandez. A number of girls danced tho " Fisherman’s Hornpipe,” and t,ho programmo concluded with tho chorus “I Hoard a “Voice,” arid “Hood Night.” At tho olnso of tho evoning Bishop Lonihan thanked the pupils for the excellent ontortaimneno and the presents that-he had received. His Lordship made sympathetic reference to the death in Auckland of the Bev. Father Purtoo, 1 ■which ho deeply regretted. The concert was a thoroughly enjoyable one, and the Sisters of St. Mary's Convent are to be congratulated upon the great success obtained.
