Per Press Association. Nelson, last night. The Supreme Court session opened before tho Chief Justice. Henry James Howard was found guilty of assault, ar.d doing bodily harm, with a strong recommendation to mercy on the ground of great provocation. Sentence was deferred. William James was found guilty of stealing money at Taltaka. Sentence was deferred. Three other charges are to be heard.
Mr J. D. Buick was appointed chairman oi tho Waimea County Council. The first show.of tbe Waimea Horticultural, Industrial, and Poultry Association opened to day. The exhibits were very numerous and excellent. There was a largo attendance, tho show being a great success
The Conciliation Board met to-day to hear tho industrial disputo between the Nelson Laborers’ Union and forty-one employers, iueludiug the City Council. Mr Gully, for the employers, said they had decided to allow the matter to go to the Arbitration Court, and did not want to call evidence. Then Mr Betts, of Beefton, appeared for the Laborers’ Union, and urged that the Board could give a fair recommendation that would obviate the
necessity of going to the Court. The Board held that as the dispute was in the hands of the Board it must go on. Thereupon a deal of evidence was heard, and tbe Board sits again to-morrow. The death occurred to-day of Mrs Songer, who arrived in 1342 ; aged S 3. Her husband accompanied Captain Wakefield and hoisted the first flag at Nelson,
