I ,•*’ sporting items, , The returns at Flcmington on Gup i Day were £BO more than on tile cor- , responding day of lasi- year, .l'nose , 01 Derby Day were sii 3ti better tnan f the previous one.. I Tiie visitors’ Handicap, recently run at Newmarket, proved _ a rare ( piece ol bungling. Tlie circumsban- | ces connected wall the race are des- , tribed as pantomimic. After a short , delay ‘‘ On ” was snouted from the . stanus and paddock, and uarrmg tvie i remark that it was not a particular- i ly happy enort on the part of Hr i Owon, tlie starter, everyone was busy ' following events in - ehe struggle, ; Gold rush, an 8 to 1 chance, was <U- i ways heading her field, and after a late enalieflge oy La Uruguaya had i teen stalled off, Goldrusn linisned half a lenjjtjta in front, with Mimicry third. As far as tlie majority of the spectators were concerned, the race was overhand being tlie last event, the crowd were setting out for the train. Then, it leases our, that two or three of the horses nod broken througn the tape, and tiie man witli the advance signal had not oil own it. The race was ordered to be run again, whereupon six of the competitors were withdrawn, but all bets of course stood. After a tedious delay tim tapes were readjusted, and through the urnzliug rain, uiu horses were seen to he running, hut up went the recall flag, clearly visible.this time. Three of the jockeys iailing to npt-icp it, ran the full course. These were Goldrusli, Exaltation'/'and Mimicry. The rider of Exaltation, in blissful ignorance o£ the situation, and amidst the ironical cheers of the crowd, rode out lit:, mount to the fullest extent ; the :i----dep of Mimicry was in vain trying to stop his mount, whilst Gpldrush cantered past. After another delay the eight remaining horses were sent on tlieir journey, being dcspatchea tins time by the llag alone. Goldrusn looked all over a winner unt I tap Dip was reached, when he cried ''enough,” and old Fosco, the friendless one of the crowd, forged ahead,‘and won comfortably. The great width of the Newmarket course is given as the reason for the unsuccessful working of the “ gate.” The Granvide resident who drew Wakeful in one of Tabtersall’s sweeps offered Mr Leslie Macdonald £3OOI to nothing in order to secure a run. Air Macdonald declined tiie offer, out ;>t the same time assuring The tjc'-'or-hoider that the mare was a sure runner, and'would nearly win. The Referee adds It was a most sportsmanlike offer on the part of Wakeful’s owner, but so contrary to iho general custom in these matters that one or two Sydney owners are of opinion that Mr Macdonald is deserving of censure. If they had been offered £3OOO, they would certainly have stood out for another thousand.
“ Whalebone,” n the Auckland Star, states : Already double betting has been commencM over The Midsummer meeting oi the Auckland Racing Club. There are always a lot of people who do not wait for .the appearance of the weights, ‘and are anxious to get in early to avoid the crush. I have heard of the double being picked before the weights were out.
